The vocal features a prominent saxophone riff, and has been covered past a number of artists since its first release. Information technology was released as a single and became a huge commercial success effectually the world. It reached number one in nearly 25 countries, selling about 6 million copies worldwide—2 million of them in the U.s.a..[5]
Groundwork [edit]
Composition and writing [edit]
In 1981, Michael was working every bit a DJ in the Bel Air restaurant near Bushey, Hertfordshire.[6] Michael explained in his autobiography, Bare, that he conceptualised "Careless Whisper" based on events from his childhood. Michael wrote, "I was on my manner to DJ at the Bel Air when I wrote 'Careless Whisper'. I accept ever written on buses, trains and in cars. It e'er happens on journeys... With 'Careless Whisper' I recollect exactly where it first came to me, where I came upward with the sax line... I recollect I was handing the money over to the guy on the passenger vehicle and I got this line, the sax line... I wrote information technology totally in my head. I worked on it for almost three months in my head."[7]
"When I was twelve, thirteen, I used to accept to chaperone my sis, who was ii years older, to an ice rink at Queensway in London," he explained. "There was a girl there with long blonde pilus whose name was Jane. I was a fatty boy in spectacles and I had a big shell on her - though I didn't stand a run a risk. My sister used to go and do what she wanted when we got to the skating rink and I would spend the afternoon swooning over this girl Jane."[8]
"A few years after, when I was sixteen, I had my first relationship with a girl called Helen," Michael continued.
It had just started to absurd off a bit when I discovered that the blonde girl from Queensway had moved in merely effectually the corner from my schoolhouse. She had moved in right side by side to where I used to stand and wait for my next-door neighbour, who used to give me a elevator home from school. And one day I saw her walk downward the path next to me and I thought – at present where did SHE come from? She didn't know it was me. It was a few years later and I looked a lot unlike. And then we played a schoolhouse disco with The Executive and she saw me singing and decided she fancied me. Past this time she was that much older and a large buxom thing – and somewhen I started seeing her. She invited me in i twenty-four hours when I was waiting for my elevator and I was ... in heaven.[8]
Michael observed that later on he stopped wearing glasses, he began getting invited to parties. "And the daughter who didn't fifty-fifty come across me when I was twelve invited me in," he noted.
So I went out with her for a couple of months but I didn't stop seeing Helen. I thought I was being smart – I had gone from being a full loser to being a two-timer. And I recall my sisters used to give me a hard fourth dimension because they establish out and they really liked the commencement girl. The whole thought of "Careless Whisper" was the first girl finding out near the second – which she never did. But I started some other relationship with a girl chosen Alexis without finishing the ane with Jane. It all got a fleck complicated. Jane found out about her and got rid of me ... The whole fourth dimension I thought I was being cool, being this ii-timer, but at that place really wasn't that much emotion involved. I did feel guilty about the beginning daughter – and I have seen her since – and the thought of the song was about her. "Devil-may-care Whisper" was us dancing, because we danced a lot, and the idea was – we are dancing ... but she knows ... and it's finished.[viii]
Andrew Ridgeley came up with the chord sequence on his Fender Telecaster he had received for his 18th birthday.[9] They continued to work together on the music and lyric both at Michael'due south business firm in Radlett, and Shirlie Holliman's aunt's basement apartment in Peckham, where Ridgeley was living.[9] [x]
Demoing [edit]
The original demo was recorded by local music producer Paul Mex, in January 1982 alongside those for "Club Tropicana" and "Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Practise)" in the front room of Ridgeley's home (his parents' lounge turned into a makeshift studio) with Mex's TEAC iv-track Portastudio. Considering about of the twenty-four hours was spent on Wham Rap!... and Ridgeley'southward mother had returned home by that point, Careless Whisper had to be recorded in i have very speedily. It featured a Doctor Rhythm drum car, an acoustic guitar (played by Ridgeley) and a bass guitar (played past Dave West), with Michael's vocal (recorded with a microphone attached to a broom handle).[11] [12] The overall cost of the recording was £20 (largely due to the rental cost of the Portastudio) and the duo landed a bargain with Innervision by Marker Dean on the strength of the demos.[13] [14]
A more complete and fully realised 2d demo was recorded on 24 March 1982 at Halligan Band Centre, Holloway, London with a bankroll band and a saxophone riff.[fifteen] However, on the same day, Michael and Ridgely were called over past Dean to sign a contract in add-on to the record deal, which they did at a nearby greasy spoon café. Michael recalls of that day:
"One of the nearly incredible moments of my life was hearing 'Careless Whisper' demoed properly, with a band, a sax and everything. It was ironic that we signed the contract with Mark [Dean] that day, the day I finally believed we had number-one textile. That same solar day nosotros signed it all abroad. But you can never really know what you are capable of, yous tin never really have that foresight."[fifteen]
Production [edit]
The vocal went through at least ii rounds of production. The offset was during a trip Michael made to Sheffield, Alabama, where he went to piece of work with producer Jerry Wexler at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in 1983.[16] [17] Michael was unhappy with the original version produced by Wexler, and decided to re-record and produce the vocal himself; the second version was the one ultimately released as a unmarried.
After the backing rails and George's vocal had been recorded, Wexler had booked the top saxophone player from Los Angeles to fly in and do the solo.[18] "He arrived at eleven and should have been gone by twelve", recalled Wham! director Simon Napier-Bong. "Instead, later two hours, he was however there while anybody in the studio shuddered with embarrassment. He just couldn't play the opening riff the fashion George wanted information technology, the way information technology had been on the demo. Only that had been made two years earlier by a friend of George's who lived round the corner and played sax for fun in the pub."[xviii]
While the saxophonist appeared to be playing the part perfectly, Michael told him, "No, it's all the same non right, you run across..." and he would lower his caput to the talkback microphone and patiently hum the part to him withal again. "It has to twitch upwardly a little merely there! Encounter...? And non too much."[xviii]
Napier-Bell consulted with Wexler over Michael's dispute with the sax sound. "Is in that location really something George wants that's different from what the sax player is playing?" Napier-Bell asked.[18] "Definitely!" replied Wexler.
I've seen things similar this earlier. There's some tiny dash that the sax role player is somehow not getting correct. Although you and I tin can't hear what it is, it may be the very thing that will make the record a hitting. The success of pop records is so ephemeral, then unbelievably unpredictable, nosotros simply can't take the chance of beingness impatient. But this sax role player'due south not going to go information technology, is he![xviii]
The version Wexler produced was released later in the year, equally a (iv:41) B-side "Special Version" on 12" in the Uk and Nippon.
The record label Innervision was going to put out the Wexler version of "Careless Whisper" after the Club Fantastic Megamix as early as 1983. Song publisher Dick Leahy said that while he could not stop the release of the Social club Fantastic Megamix, he could stop the release of this single on the ground that as a publisher they "have the right to grant the starting time license of the recording of a tune of which he controls the copyright". He was unable to do annihilation about the Club Fantastic Megamix because information technology was already released material. He said: "Nosotros knew how big that song could be, so it was necessary to upset a few people to finish it."[19] Towards the end of 1983, Michael was as well committed to touring with Wham! to promote Fantastic, and then according to him information technology would non have made sense to release "Devil-may-care Whisper" as a solo single in the centre of the tour, despite it being part of the setlist.[20]
Michael later went dorsum to London's Sarm West's Studio 2 to re-record the track, the courage of which was done with a live rhythm section in i take, with "loads of stuff bunged on [overdubbed] afterward" as Michael added, although the feel of it was basically live.[21] [22] Michael elaborated on the song's production and how it turned out in the finish:
"Jerry Wexler did 1 recording of "Devil-may-care Whisper" with me. And then we re-mixed that, which meant re-shooting the video and then we completely re-did the track about iv weeks before it was due to exist released. When we originally made it I was totally in awe of Jerry Wexler and information technology was the first time that I had ever felt like that about anybody that I'd worked with. Usually I have trouble convincing myself that people know what they're doing. In this example I had to go drunk in order to sing, I was so nervous. Anyhow, my publisher [Dick Leahy] and I had loads of discussions about whether the tape was good enough for the song and whether there was plenty of me in it because it just did not sound like me. I said 'it'south dandy. Jerry'south washed a peachy task on it', and for the first time since we'd started I was blind to what was going on considering the song was already two and a one-half years old and I just did non have a clue nearly where else I could take it. Eventually I simply thought, 'sod this. I'chiliad going to go in and do it every bit if information technology had never been done before with the musicians we normally use and see what happens.' The runway was much better considering I was relaxed and I call back that our musicians did a much improve job than the Muscle Shoals department". [22]
According to English jazz musician Dan Forshaw, saxophonist Steve Gregory had received a telephone call to re-record the song'south distinctive solo; he was the eleventh saxophone player to record the solo, for Michael was determined to get the sound he wanted.[23] "Session musicians exercise not take much thought what they are going to be recording until they arrive, and this was the case for Steve and another saxophonist who was ahead of him in the (queue)", Forshaw recalled.
Every bit usual there was a lot of waiting around and the guy in front of Steve threw in the towel saying, 'it's only going to be some crappy B side anyway so I'm off'. Steve waited and then discovered that the solo wasn't that easy to play in the written key, as his former Selmer Mark VI tenor didn't have a top F♯ key. And so, the engineer slowed the tape down so that Steve could record the solo a semitone lower than intended. Once the record was put dorsum to the normal speed, an 'unnatural' saxophone sound was created that sounded a bit like an Alto in the Paul Desmond vibe, but lacking a flake more than depth and darkness to the sound. George Michael had but arrived at the studio and said 'that's the one, that'southward the sax solo I want'. This could exist down to that whole 80s synth concept where sounds became increasingly 'manufactured', or merely that George never recognized it was 'incorrect'.[23]
The officially released single was issued in August 1984, entering the Uk Singles Chart at number 12. Within ii weeks it was at number 1, ending a nine-week run at the top for "2 Tribes" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.[4] Information technology stayed at number one for three weeks, going on to become the fifth best-selling single of 1984 in the United Kingdom; outsold only by the 2 Frankie Goes to Hollywood tracks, "2 Tribes" and "Relax", Stevie Wonder with "I Merely Chosen to Say I Love Y'all", and Band Aid's "Exercise They Know It's Christmas?". The song as well topped the charts in 25 other countries, including the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States in February 1985 nether the credit "Wham! featuring George Michael". Spending three weeks at the top in America, the song was after named Billboard 's number-one vocal of 1985. The song was #1 on the smooth radio summit 500 songs of all time chart – proving its iconic status.
Despite the success, Michael was never fond of the song. He said in 1991 that it "was not an integral part of my emotional development ... it disappoints me that you tin can write a lyric very flippantly—and not a especially good lyric—and information technology can hateful so much to then many people. That'southward disillusioning for a writer."[nineteen]
Music video [edit]
The official music video (which uses the shorter single version instead of the full album version and was directed by Duncan Gibbins, who previously directed "Wake Me Up Before Yous Go-Go") shows the guilt felt by a man (portrayed by Michael) over an affair, and his acknowledgement that his partner (Lisa Stahl) is going to find out. Madeline Andrews-Hodge plays the woman who lures George away. It was filmed on location in Miami, Florida, in February 1984[24] and features such locales equally Coconut Grove and Watson Isle. The final function of the video shows Michael leaning out of a top floor balustrade of Miami'south Grove Towers.[25] [26]
A commencement original version of the video was edited with the Jerry Wexler 1983 version, and featured Andrew as a cameo, handing over a letter to a dark-haired George. This version had a more detailed storyline, but was so re-edited later.[27]
According to producer Jon Roseman, production of the video was "A fucking disaster".[28] According to Michael'south co-star Lisa Stahl, "They lost footage of our kissing scene and then we had to reshoot it, which I didn't complain about ... Then George decided he didn't like his hair then he flew his sister over from England to cut information technology and we had to reshoot more scenes."[29]
As the band felt they had "screwed upwardly" the video, further footage of Michael singing the song onstage was afterward shot at the Lyceum Theatre, London.[28] The video performance (1984 Version) was officially uploaded to George Michael YouTube channel on 24 Oct 2009. It has over 852 million views as of 2022.
